Herend
One of the leading porcelain produced in Europe is Herend porcelain from Hungary. Founded its factory in 1826, Herend began its production of true porcelain from around 1842.
At first, the products were modeled on the styles and designs of Meissen
(Germany) ware or Japanese and Chinese porcelain. Herend porcelain exhibited
in The World’s Fair held in London in 1851 caught the eyes of Queen Victoria,
who ordered a whole dinner service of Herend porcelain. Herend came to
win worldwide fame since then, and the design made during that time is
known as the Victoria pattern. This is an elegant design, whose source
can be traced to porcelain of Qing dynasty China.
Herend porcelain was particulary active during the latter half of the 19th century, when world’s fairs flourished and were popular events. Many European kings, queens and aristocrats, including Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elizabeth of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, appreciated and cherished the ware. Herend porcelain continues to win high recognition today.
This exhibition is the most substantial and richest in content by showing important works from Hungary, featuring the Herend porcelain collection which is the pride of the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest, the Hungarian National Museum and the Herend porcelain Museum. Visitors can understand the overall history of Herend porcelain by viewing representative works from each period. This exhibition also introduces another theme, “Chinoiserie”, a style inspired by design of about 230 pieces of Chinese ceramics.
