Romantic Russia
from the Collection of The State Tretyakov Gallery

space
Dense forests of white birches and oaks, and snow-covered plains.
Cities distinguished by churches with typical domed roofs, and women with limpid white skin. Artists discovered something deeply romantic about these ordinary Russian scenes and depicted them in their works. This was in the late 19 century as the Rus sian Empire was beginning to show signs of collapsing not long before the country would be thrown into the tumult of the Russian Revolution. Along with budding regional patriotism and beautiful natural landscapes, paintings of the era focused on subjects such as Russia's complex social conditions and the people who lived through these times. In this exhibition, we present a collection of 72 works from The State Tretyakov Gallery, a palace of Russian art. These works, by painters such as Ivan Kramskoy, Ilya Repin, Isaak Levitan, and Ivan Shishkin, who are associated with this turbulent era from the late 19th to the early 201" century, evoke the Russian romanticism inherent in images of nature and people. We hope that as many people as possible will take this opportunity to savor the profound stories that are contained within each of the pictures. In closing, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to The State Tretyakov Gallery for allowing us to borrow precious works from their collection and for providing us with academic as sistance. We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Embassy of the Russian Federation to Japan and the Russian Cooperation Agency (Rossotrudnichestvo) for their support, and to Japan Airlines for their cooperation as well as to the many oth ers who helped us realize this exhibition.
